On the Way to Buffalo

The job for this day was to get to Buffalo so as to meet the Mrs. Colonel on Saturday morning.  Today was not a romantic day, so tomorrow can be.  I-90 almost all the way; some of it freeway, some of  it toll road, all of it businesslike.  They allow three trailers behind a semi in Ohio as they do in Oregon; who knew?  You will discover a direct inverse relationship between miles driven and the number of interesting photos taken on any given day.  With any luck, images tomorrow will include some not too banal shots of the Niagara Falls.

On one hand this is uncivilized country.  Even a marginally acceptable bagel is hard to find.  (There is probably a source in Detroit, but the Colonel did not get close enough to find it.)  Critical supplies for this venture include rice cakes.  (You can run the commissary on your trip.)  We had to go 25 miles out of our way in the wrong way today to get to a Trader Joe's to manage resupply.  It looked, of course, like every Trader Joe's you've ever been in; friendly folks in Hawaiian shirts and ringing bells.  It had exactly the same products arranged in exactly the same order at the TJ at home and the rice cake shortage is assuaged.

On the other hand, and more seriously, the hand of man on this land is as evident here as it is in Italy.  The hills are gentle and molded to suit tractors.  There is very little wild land and the wooded sections can be seen to separate tilled land.  It is, of course, beautiful in its fall livery.

On the Road

These are illicit pics taken with one hand while the other directs the Acura downstream.

Vineyards, in New York?
Of course there are vineyards in New York or where would all the Manischewitz come from?  What is surprising is that there are literally miles and miles of vines along I-90 hard up against Lake Erie.  These vines have not yet been trimmed of their summer growth.  One wonders who does this skilled and difficult work hereabouts.

Hidden behind all these wires is the 1797 settlement date for the lakeside town of Mentor, Ohio.

Tomorrow: recovery or the Mrs. Colonel at Buffalo International and on to Niagara (and Cooperstown.)
