On the High Line, Lunch, OMG, Lunch, Seen on the Road,

On the High Line

The road continues east.  We are going too fast.  The limit is 70 MPH and the miles melt away.  We certainly don't want to get there without having been in the parts in between.

It's our road

What are these things on flatcars?  The wings of a really big wind generator.  The whole train was full of these and the components of the towers.

Lunch, OMG, Lunch

The Colonel apologizes for the poor photo.  It was the vulture that prompted him to stop for lunch.

Actually, this is the first really awful thing the colonel has eaten on this trip; the daily special, "half a cheese burger with potatoes and gravy."  It was, in fact, good.   And the service was friendly and the restroom clean.  The burger without the stuff would have been better.  A search for a salad is ongoing.

Seen on the road

You never know when you will run into a Holmes quote.

The Dinosauria are still seen along the High Line

The Tin Woodsman's name was Lee Riddick; who knew?  And there he is, a bit bluer than we would have suspected, moving with purpose outside his plumbing shop on Highway 2.

A port in Montana?  It's one of the ports of entry into Canada.

A slide for tough kids.

The Colonel has no idea what this vehicle is for -- there was no one to ask.  Could it be a large go anywhere power unit?  There were half a dozen on them parked in an equipment lot.

That little thing on the horizon is an oil well being drilled.  The first of many to be seen as we drive east

This and the image below show a workers encampment along the High Line.  Whoever owns the land supplies a spot on the  ground and power.  These folks work on the oil drilling explosion in North Dakota.  There is a casino across the street.  Of course.

There are Lots of these, some fancier than this with temporary mobile housing like that delivered by FEMA after a disaster.

Tomorrow:  More easting and a discussion of fracing.

  2. Hey, James, I am a bit late to catch up with you on this blog. I am enjoying your people-free photos :-) I MUST comment on Williston, which is special to me because my in-laws live there and I've actually visited there more times than I ever thought I would. It's actually become quite famous now because of the fracking boom there (hence all the RVs and weird machines). You caught the spirit of the place. My husband has frowned many a time over the ubiquity of gravy in ND. He says he's eaten at that diner, but never had the burger with gravy. (I removed my first comment because it showed "unknown" instead of my name .. .now you have a "ghost" comment just for Halloween.)
