Buying Gas, On the High Line, Seen On the road
Buying Gas
Buying gas (and renting motel rooms) are the two inescapable financial transactions that are part of the One Lap project. The gas chore is usually done just before selection of a motel in the evening. Today it was done first thing in the morning. A drive over a big bridge took us from Duluth, Minnesota to Superior, Michigan and the Holiday Quick Stop, the choice being motivated by the asking price for unleaded.
The Colonel stood, looking at the pump, credit card in hand and it took a while to figure out that there was nowhere to insert the card. OK, it's been a while since we were faced with a non card reading gas pump. but this is the wilderness. The lady in the shop told me to 'Pump your gas and pay for it afterwards." !! Nice people here in Michigan. The Colonel cannot report on the quality of the donuts.

On the High Line
The decision to make this trip in October and November may well be questioned. It is not too early for serious snow here, up with which the Colonel cannot put; if it snows at all seriously, the Colonel goes into hibernation to been seen again, if at all, in the spring. August of September would probably be safer, weather-wise.
However...
We hear about fall colors in New England, but they are certainly abundant here in Michigan in October. The colors can be ferocious, shocking; reds and golds and rusts and browns and yellows, with evergreens and white birch trunks for punctuation. Groves of birch turn a yellow gold color and among a stand of these trees, the air itself seems filled with this color. It looks like a move special effect, not possible on this planet. As yet there is no satisfactory picture to share. The Colonel will work on it.
Seen on the Road

A reason not to live here. |
|
The American Victory, nestled to the dock, looks a little sad. |
|
There are many fish sculptures to be seen on this part of the road. This is a big one. Note the hook in its mouth. |
|
Trompe-l'œil, certainly good enough to fool my eyes. |
|
There is a sign suggesting the use of two separate attachment methods for persons climbing this tower. Oh yes. |
|
When was the last time you saw a McDonald's sign with a number on it? |
|
Golden Arches? |
When was the last time you saw actual Golden Arches, or SpeeDee himself grinning at you with his creepy dime shaped head?
|
Please look closely. |
The name is worth a moment. There is no way to tell what service this guy offers.
|
Some of us go to The Frosty Goat, |
|
and some of us go to Barb's Café next door. Your call. |
The term High Line is not used much hereabouts. Tomorrow we will reach the end of this particular road and turn south down central Michigan on our way to Kalamazoo and on to Detroit.
